Mrs. O’s Othello Creative Project Due Date:

Dramatic Song Interpretation: The conflicts, betrayal, and hurt feelings found in Shakespeare plays are all issues that people still experience today. For this project, take a modern day song and match the meaning of the song with a particular scene in the play Othello. You and your group will need to create a ‘music video’ that brings the characters, the conflicts, and the drama in Othello to a modern day understanding. This project may require a very good understanding of video editing (if you choose to record the performance for class). Moreover, this project will definitely demand some pretty convincing dramatic performance skills. The song you choose must be radio edited and you must have the song approved my Mrs. Overly. HOWEVER, your song choice will remain a secret until the presentation date.
Maximum: Four People

Symbolic Artistic Representation: Many artists have found the scenes in Shakespeare’s plays to serve as a powerful muse for their artistic creation. Shakespeare’s Othello offers a great deal of creative opportunities for the creative minded. For this project, create an artistic piece that captures not simply an event in the story. Instead, layer your project. Give it more meaning and depth by working in one of these ideas:
  1. The character’s strength/weakness
  2. Light vs dark imagery
  3. The fine line between chaos and order
  4. Mythological allusions
  5. Eqyptian handkerchief
Consider trying a medium that you haven’t tried before.

Make sure you have your project approved by Mrs. Overly to make sure that it reaches the expectations of a creative project. All art projects must be on a large canvas
Maximum: One Person

Dramatic Performance: One of the drawbacks of reading the play in class is that for many of you, you are reading the lines, rather than having the lines performed for you. Plays were written to be acted and when the lines are read without the emotion that the writer intended, there is certainly a loss in translation. Now that you understand the characters and the atmosphere in the play, you have a better understanding as to how these lines were meant to be read. For this option, you will choose a selection from Othello to use in your own dramatic monologue. After selecting a soliloquy or speech, you will memorize the lines and consider the best way for this scene to be interpreted dramatically. Effort will be noted, but the overall performance dictates the final grade.
Participants in this activity will also find themselves eligible for the Delaware State Shakespeare Competition.
Maximum: Two people

Director’s Cut
This project is for the movie editing pros. This movie will call for a unique approach to the story of Othello. Consider drawing attention to a particular theme or interpretation of the story. Perhaps you would show parts of the story that aren’t covered in the play. The use of symbolism, music, setting, and costume will be analyzed by your audience. I am not looking for a typical movie; I’m looking for an experience.
